Granola is one of my favourite things to make and is a staple in our house. It's so simple to make your own and much cheaper and more nutritious than most store bought varieties. The flavour combinations are endless and I tend to just throw in whatever nuts, seeds, oats etc that I have in my pantry and then add different combinations of spices (such as cinnamon, ground ginger and nutmeg) and a natural sweetener such as maple syrup or rice malt syrup.

The addition of orange zest in this recipe gives the granola a lovely citrus note which marries beautifully with the cinnamon and maple syrup. Try granola with fruit and natural or coconut yogurt.


5 cups rolled oats

3 cups coconut flakes

1 cup almonds, roughly chopped

1.5 cups pepitas

1 cup sunflower seeds

1 cup sesame seeds

The finely grated zest of 2 oranges

1/3 cup extra virgin coconut oil, melted

1/2 cup maple syrup (you could use rice malt syrup or honey instead)

3 tsp cinnamon


  1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line 2 large baking trays with baking paper.

  2. Place the oats, coconut flakes, almonds and seeds in a large mixing bowl and combine well.

  3. In a separate small bowl, combine the melted coconut oil, maple syrup, cinnamon and orange zest.

  4. Pour the liquid mix over the dry mix and mix well.

  5. Spread the granola mixture evenly onto your lined baking trays and bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until toasty and golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

  6. Store in a large glass jar or sealed container/s in the fridge.

Makes 8 cups (900g) of granola (approx)
